Character Information
Name: Misa Amane
Canon: Death Note
Canon Point: Chapter 56, after making the eye deal with Ryuk the second time and while she was walking back to the headquarters the investigation team was at. There were plenty of reflective windows near the entrance before she entered.
Age: 19
History: Here!
Personality:
At first glance, Misa is nothing more than a cheerful, peppy girl - lovesick and affectionate, she gives off the vibe of many feminine heroines, but that is definitely not all there is to her.
Admittedly, she is bubbly – someone who is seen laughing and smiling constantly, bursting with childish charm. She is expressive, always wearing her emotions on her sleeve whether they are smiles, frowns, or pouts. As someone with great social intelligence, Misa is an outgoing and friendly girl, having ease using her charm to befriend (or control people, if need be). She is a notably good actress, proven by both her successful career as a model and actress, as well as her ability to pull information out of people and act under high pressure. Additionally, because of her career as a model, she is quite fashionable and conscious of her physical appearance, giving great care to her style and fitness.
There are many labels that define Misa - lover, model, killer. She is someone who is driven by love - specifically her love for Light Yagami - and it is this love that enables her to find the strength to aid in many of Light's plots as Kira. As a lover, Misa is willing to do anything for the one she loves, putting Light's life before her own and promising to dedicate the rest of her life to him upon first sight, as he responsible for punishing the robber who killed her parents. She is also extremely affectionate, constantly initiating physical contact with Light and the other close acquaintances she has throughout the series.
She follows his will almost blindly, not caring even if he only is using her for her powers. As long as Light wills it, she will inevitably do his bidding, claiming that he doesn't need to ask her to do things, but rather just tell her to do them. In that sense, she is both a loyal and gullible lover, as she never thinks of betraying Light but also never questions his actions nor the treatment she receives from him. In the long run, all Misa longs to do is be of use to him and be helpful to him, in hope that he eventually will love her…she is a bit selfless in her duties to Light, always willing to do anything and everything with little to nothing being given to her in return, whether it be a reciprocation of her feelings or any other mode of exchange.
As is made clear, though, not all of Misa's habits as a lover are healthy. For example, when Light is under suspicion of being Kira, he tells Misa that he will date other girls to avoid being caught with Misa alone - in response to this, Misa threatens to kill any girls she sees with Light. While she loves Light deeply, she also lets her own emotions get in the way of seeing the bigger picture of their plans. Misa never follows through with this, even after stalking Light on these dates that he went on with other girls, but the threat alone is definitely showing of her possessive personality. Her love is all-consuming; everything she does is motivated by this love, and this love is so abnormally strong that it bewilders those around her, considering she barely even knows who Light is. Following the death of her parents, Misa became someone who was desperate to feel close to and loved by someone else - her thankfulness towards "Kira" for punishing the man who killed her parents evolved into an obsessive, corrupted love for Light. She is very fixated on her own idea of romantic love, as well as her idealization of Light as her boyfriend, neither of which are grounded in reality - like all Death Note holders, Misa is corrupted by the Death Note, and it shows in her possessive, impulsive, and self-sacrificial acts when it comes to her relationship with Light.
Because Misa measures her life's worth in relation to how she can be of use to Light, when she isn't able to be useful to him, she is desperate and willing to do anything to continue to have purpose for him - even if it means halving her own lifespan twice. Her obsession with finding a use for her life in serving Light out of love all stems from the death of her parents and feeling that her own life had little purpose after the fact.
Unlike many other characters in the series, Misa's sense of morals seems to revolve more around her own desires than any particular definition of justice, as she is willing to break laws and kill innocent people to achieve her goals. In fact, her actions as the Second Kira are almost all led by Light; her desire to change the world into a place without criminals is, yes, motivated by the death of her parents, but also heavily driven by her desire to follow whatever it is that is Light’s desire. Misa is definitely lacking when it comes to the moral conviction of the other main leads of the series, as she is personally fine with being told what to do and not bothering to consider if something is 'right' or 'wrong' - she, essentially, always sees Light as having the moral high ground, and anyone who opposes him as the unjust. She has no notable remorse towards using the Death Note to kill criminals, though many in her same position may hesitate to take the lives of others, but Misa is driven both by her worshipping of Kira and her love for Light to carry out these killings, and thus, does not consider deeply the moral seriousness of her actions.
In general, Misa tends to be quite impulsive and frivolous, acting on her emotions rather than logical thought. This doesn’t necessarily mean that she isn’t intelligent; she is definitely capable of cleverness and subtlety, as well as acting independently of Light, but it is also evident that many of her actions are the result of her feelings. It is both a weakness and a strength; while she does not get caught up in thinking up convoluted plans or finding the perfect way to solve a problem, she is prone to making errors in her tendency to be quick to take action - many of the errors that she makes throughout the series (leaving physical evidence behind, etc.) are a result of her impulsiveness rather than a lack of intelligence, though it is true that she is no genius when it comes to academia. Her lack of foresight is definitely a severe downfall, though her ability to act independently and make up plans on the fly sets her apart from the complicated planners that make up the series' cast.
Another notable trait is that she has astounding mental strength and perseverance. She is capable of withstanding great tragedy and traumatic situations, and seldom lets any mental weakness show - she is someone who can sit with any pain so long as she has something to cling onto. Not just anyone can sit through nearly two months of solitary confinement and come out as bright as she is; Misa is definitely someone who is able to endure, someone who won't yield in the face of tragedy nor torture as long as her life has purpose.
As a whole, Misa is someone steered by love and devotion. A successful idol and an equally successful killer, she is much, much more than meets the eye.
Abilities & Skills:
SHINIGAMI EYES
Misa has the eyes of a Shinigami, meaning that she is able to see the names and lifespans of humans just by looking at them. However, because lifespans appear just as long lists of numbers and are only decipherable by a Shinigami themself, she cannot understand how much longer anyone has to live. Additionally, she cannot see her own lifespan, nor the lifespans of Shinigami or other Death Note users. While stylistically in the series, her eyes are shown to glimmer when she uses this ability, in reality it is impossible to tell that she is using or even has this ability, as her eyes appear regularly.
In addition to being able to see the names and lifespans of people, her eyesight was also enhanced by the eyes - her sight is 3.6 times the quality that it was before she got them, giving her the visual acuity of about 72/20. This means that her eyesight is unnaturally accurate, and that she is able to see the faces and names of people from quite far distances away. With such accurate eyesight, it's also easy for her to notice small details that someone with regular eyesight may not notice.
Here is a diagram of how much she must see of someone to see their name and lifespan. While she can also see someone's name and lifespan through a photograph or a video, it isn't possible to do so through a drawing of someone alone. Lastly, she cannot see the names or lifespans of people who are already dead, as she will see nothing when she looks at them.
DEATH NOTE
Her only other supernatural ability comes from her Death Note, which essentially is a notebook that is capable of killing anyone who's name is written inside of it. The notebook's powers allow the writer to specify the time and cause of death so long as they are written within a certain amount of time, and of course, as long as the full name of the person is written (while the face of said person is in the writer's mind). There are many rules to the Death Note, which can be found in a more organized form here.
ACTING
Misa is an extremely good actress, capable of acting under extreme pressure and under the threat of her life. This is clear not only in her wildly successful career as an actress, but also in her ability to convince complete strangers to give her information that she wants them to. She also possesses extremely great charm and social intelligence, allowing her to navigate interacting with others with ease no matter the environment.
Inventory/Companions:
PAGES OF THE DEATH NOTE
On her person, she would have a few pages of the Death Note, a notebook which if you write the name of a human inside (while having their face in your mind), causes the death of that person. The cause of death can be specified (like an accident, suicide, or illness), however a death caused by the Death Note cannot affect the lifespans of others. This means that one cannot use the Death Note to make someone kill others. These pieces of the Death Note would turn to regular paper on arrival.
PURSE
Inside is a variety of cosmetics and other gothic accessories that she carries with her, as well as a few writing instruments.
Choice: Monster, specifically Vampire!
Reason: Misa is a fan of horror and the grotesque, dabbles in gothic fashion, and has a penchant for romance, all of which are elements associated with the drama of Vampires. I think it would be an interesting concept to play with for her, considering that the idea of being a Vampire can be enchanting, even romantic at first, but Misa has a difficult time separating romantic ideals and reality. It would be a challenge for her to come to terms with the concept of dying slowly, and needing to feed off of other living beings, especially in an admittedly monstrous and grotesque way. Coming to terms with her transformation would be a long and difficult process, one that she would react to at first with non-chalant "I'm sure it can't be permanent"'s, before developing into a great disillusionment with her circumstances - which she would have a very hard time accepting.
She values her beauty and her life (so long as it's useful to Light), and dying slowly and losing her fresh, lively look would shake her. I think there are many interesting directions to go in with how this would develop her personality, depending on whether she could find her new talents of hypothetical use to Light. Misa's gift for deceit would lend itself well to the added hypnotic abilities of Vampires, and it would be interesting to see how she would develop her skills to replace her Death Note related ones.
